Every incoming freshman runs into one worry before starting their first year at UW Madison. How will I make friends? If that’s you, just know you are not alone, as everyone has felt that way at some point. Well, you’re in luck! I have three tips for you to help find the bucky to your badger. The secret is actually pretty simple: club fairs, floor meetings, and Welcome Week events.
During your first year there is welcome week, and there are tons of planned events that are great for meeting other badgers. Follow the simple formula of going to an event, introducing yourself to as many people you want and converse! Learn more about your peers and campus at the same time. This is a great introduction to meeting others you may pass by everyday.
Another way to start hunting for your Bucky is the Club fair in the Kohl Center. It may seem overwhelming at first, which is totally normal. There are tons of clubs at UW-Madison and one for everything. There is an online website of all organizations on campus. Find and join at least two clubs you’re interested in and attend their meetings and branch out and talk to new people there!
Additionally, you can connect with others by going to floor meetings, as people living near you will be there. It’s a great way to be introduced to those around you. An alternative is a simple knock on the door and introducing yourself. This is a great way to establish acquaintances that can develop into everlasting friendships!
Happy Hunting!
