Three Things I Wish I Knew as a Freshman About Building My Career at UW–Madison

Starting college can feel overwhelming, especially when everyone seems to have their future figured out. As a UW–Madison student, I’ve learned that building your career doesn’t just happen all at once; it starts with small steps. Looking back, there are three things I wish I had known as a freshman.

First, get involved earlier than you think you need to. Joining student organizations helped me meet people with similar interests and learn about career paths I didn’t even know existed. Whether it’s a professional club, student organization, or campus job, getting involved can open doors to opportunities and connections.

Second, don’t be afraid to explore different majors and career interests. Many freshmen feel pressure to have a perfect plan right away, but college is the time to learn what you enjoy. Taking classes outside your comfort zone can help you discover new interests and build valuable skills.

Finally, start networking before you think you’re ready. Networking can sound intimidating, but it can be as simple as talking with professors during office hours, attending campus events, or connecting with older students. Some of the best advice I’ve received came from casual conversations with people who were once in my shoes.

UW–Madison offers countless opportunities to grow professionally, but the key is taking advantage of them early. You don’t need your entire future planned out as a freshman. Focus on getting involved, staying curious, and building relationships. Those small steps can make a huge difference throughout your college experience.
