The #1 Way to Succeed: Seek Rejection

You read that right, the number one way to succeed at UW-Madison, is to seek rejection. Let me explain:

College is all about learning your passion and building a future. However, this isn’t possible without putting yourself out there. For example, I am debating between Journalism and Film. Naturally, I wanted to understand what both fields looked like. A future in Journalism is easy to imagine because of social media. However, social media doesn’t provide as many examples of Film careers. So, naturally, I did what any sensible person would do: I auditioned for a movie. Did I ever in a million years think I would get the part? No. Technically speaking, I didn’t. However, to my immense surprise, I was offered a different role which allows me to be on set for an entire day. During which I get to observe the director, producer, actors, and the crew to see what it is like to film a movie. Now, not only do I have an insight on a field I had zero knowledge of, I have also managed to build my resume and create connections.

You will never receive a yes if you never ask in the first place. You want to create brand content? Ask a small business! You want to design websites? Pitch yourself! When the worst thing that can happen is rejection, you have no reason not to do something. Stop thinking about whether or not someone will say no, and start thinking about what if they say yes! Who knows, maybe when you chase that no, you may just end up with a yes.
